Originally named as “Bathing Ape” Bape is a very well-known Japanese brand of jackets founded by Tomoaki Nagao, commonly known as Nigo. The men had studied fashion and editing at Bunka Fashion College. After working as a stylist and editor for the popular magazine “Popeye” he decided to put his skills into practice by launching Bathing Ape (Bape) in a shop named Nowhere.
Initially started as a one-stop destination for all apparel needs, today the brand has transformed into a chain of stores, widespread all across Japan. Each store caters to different market segments including the Bape Kids store, Bape Pirate Store, Bape store for men's and women's apparel, Bapexclusive Pirate, Bapexclusive Aoyama, etc. With his mother being a nurse and his father a billboard maker, Nigo spent most of his time around his toys that reflected upon his personality as well. Thus he ended up naming his brand after one of his most loved toys.
